This week concludes my first month as a Temporary Articled Student at Lower Mainland Law - Garih, Glouberman. I have had the opportunity to appear in both Provincial and Supreme Court. This has allowed me the chance to conduct bail hearings, guilty pleas, a peace bond disposition, and many adjournments! I have had the pleasure of meeting many Crowns, defence counsel, and fellow articling students along the way. I have also been able to shadow in-house duty counsel in the Surrey Courthouse.

As an addition to the practical work, I have been working on other case files in-office, where I am examining particulars, prepping cross-examination, direct examination, charter notices, and other legal memos.

I am so grateful for all that I have learned in this short period, and am looking forward to the rest of this summer! ⚖️

My name is Deianeira Rematore, and I am a fourth year criminology student attending Kwantlen Polytechnic University. I was born and raised in Surrey, with a Dutch and Italian immigrant background. I am planning on attending Law School in British Columbia after I graduate with my Bachelors of Arts in Criminology this upcoming June. Attending a polytechnic university has allowed me to not only obtain theory based knowledge, but it has also given me experiential learning and practical application of my learning. I have a focused background in research on wrongful convictions, women and crime, and other minorities and crime. I have had the opportunity to learn as a visitor within the BC court systems, and the Fraser Valley Institution for Women. My studies have focused on restorative justice approaches to crime, and critically analyzing the current criminal justice system. My research has stemmed from primary sources, such as police officers, paramedics, ex-gang members, and current inmates.

As I am soon ending my bachelors degree, I felt that taking a practicum in a law firm would be very beneficial and supplemental to what I have learned over the past four years. Courses I have taken, such as “Procedure and Evidence,” “Criminal Law,” and “Law & Society” have been my favourite courses I have studied. I chose to do a practicum with Guillaume Garih as he is a hardworking and busy criminal defence lawyer. It is an amazing opportunity to work alongside a practicing lawyer. From what I have studied, and what I am passionate about, there are alternatives to prison. This practicum will allow me to obtain experimental learning in the defence side of the law.

I expect to graduate at the end of this spring semester, and I hope to go to law school. So far my interest in criminal law, and I hope this practicum will confirm my interest! I am so excited to learn from a practicing lawyer and be out in the real world!
